The Roman
Castles Area means outings to the
countryside, the whole-roasted pig of Ariccia, the
wine from Marino, Velletri and Frascati, the strawberries
of Nemi, restaurants over-looking the lakes. It
is normal for the inhabitants of Rome to associate
the Alban Hills with these ways of using their spare
time to relax al weekends.
Just a short trip from Rome, the Roman Castles provide
the most genuine of Roman historical traditions
there are two areas in the roman castles which are
devoted to vineyards. The first is that of the production
of white wine of Frascati d..o.c. which extends
over the northern slopes of the Alban hills including
Montecompatri, Monte Porzio Catone and Colonna.
The
second zone of importance occupies an angle opposite
the latium Volcano between the hills facing the
Pontine plain where the white wine d.o.c. of Marino,
Colli Albani, Colli Lanuvini, and Velletri is produced.
The vineyards also extend towards Ardea and the
via Pontina. There is also a small production of
red wine: Velletri and Merlot di Aprilia.
The list must obviously take into account the BREAD
especially the renowned LARIANO
and Genzano types.
Loaves of this bread cooked in wood-fired ovens
are widespread on the tables of Roman homes. There
is also the whole roasted pig, good everywhere but
really exceptional from Ariccia. The WHOLE
ROASTED PIG froma Ariccia, the quality
of which is safeguarded by a consortium analogous
to that of wine d.o.c. all over the central part
of Italy. Stalls with the sign "Porchetta di
Ariccia" whole roast pig from Ariccia are frequently
found in fetes and markets in Italy.
Whith no doubt at all, one the most marked products
of the Castles area are the strawberries, grown
almost excusively on the banks of Lake Nemi. The
real "Fragoline di Nemi"
(strawberries from Nemi) are small but exquisite.
Honey is also extracted in limited quantities together
with olive oil, fruit and jam, also sold in the
area. The chestnut woods are ideal for the Porcini
mushrooms and other types which grow in the Castles
area.
Lastly, but certainly not the least important are
the Pontine Marsh cheeses with the highest quality
and taste ranging from Roman Pecorino cheese (sheep's
cheese), caciotta, provolone to fresh buffalo cheese.
These still maintain the ties with the past together
with their wholesomeness. |
